Katrina

Hurricane Katrina devastated the city of New Orleans. Thankfully the French Quarter experienced just the glancing blows of the storm and its restaurants and original ambiance remains. The city will rise again. There is something about it that defies logic and we're sure one of those things is its Creole/Cajun cuisine. People travel from all parts of the world to the restaurants of New Orleans' French Quarter for just such a delicacy as a good bowl of gumbo. Many Orleanians still travel to the Quarter for gumbo when, in the case of today's smaller families, a big pot produces just too much gumbo or when making a big pot takes too much time and effort. Hurricane Katrina displaced all the city's residents including 87 members of my family. Fortunately, all but two of them, have chosen to return and have rebuilt or are in the process of rebuilding their homes now. Recently a friend and I traveled to New Orleans and gathered at my cousin's home to celebrate a reunion of sorts and to dine on, what else… great Creole gumbo. That pot of gumbo re-ignited my dream to make and sell my grandmother's gumbo.
